John Glenn: Space Adventurer. Flights of Fancy

History is being made today as the first man to orbit earth gets to try his wings on a second journey. History is made as one of our senior citizens gets to do something most of us can only dream about.

John Herschel Glenn, Jr was born July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio 4 PM EST. Birth data AA source from birth certificate as posted in Lois Rodden's database. 4 PM is a bit too "rounded off" to me, so keep in mind that his chart may be off ten minutes one way or the other.

Interestingly, his middle name is that of the famous astronomer that discovered Uranus. Maybe he is related. If anyone knows, please write me. I am curious. Otherwise, looking at his chart you see that Uranus is aptly prominent in his birth chart.

The man has Sun and Mars close to a conjunction. He is a do-er, a man of action, courageous, and aggressive at heart. Mars sextile Saturn shows his ability to organize and plan, and adhere to his ambitions. This is a hard worker. Mercury conjunct Pluto, and trine Uranus shows a fine thinker and good intellect. Moon trine Jupiter could indicate a man fond of travel. Moon trine Saturn produces the ability for discipline necessary for a career in the armed forces. Chart ruler near the MC would speak of a man bound for personal fame and success.

What interests me most is the two flights. How are they shown in the transits? Can we find a common thread?

Here are the charts for both flights. The Space Flights are simply listed for their dates, ignoring actual time and place, because we are more interested in the comparison between Glenn's chart and the major transits.

It is quite obvious that Jupiter sits on Glenn's IC as he makes this historic second foray into space.

Flight one in 1962 does not show the IC or any angle accentuated by transit however.

So, what do we find in common?

There are several indicators, but let us look at the most obvious.

In the first flight transit Pluto opposed Glenn's natal Uranus. In the second flight transit Saturn is at the same declination as Glenn's natal Uranus and and North Node. Uranus in the natus parallels his North Node. Glenn's natal Uranus forms one leg of a yod to Neptune on the ninth house cusp.

We see only one longitudinal degree highlighted in both flight charts. 28 Leo in Glenn's ninth house. The position of the Moon's North Node in October 1998 is the same position as Uranus in 1962. What is the aspect 28 Leo makes to Glenn's birth chart? It is sesquiquadrate to the natal Moon at 13 Capricorn. The Moon is the second leg of that yod supporting Neptune in the ninth.

So, you might say to yourself that Moon is in second house and rules 8th house so must indicate something to do with money. It is possible money may be a motivating force, although not my opinion. Or you could say to yourself that the transits are in the ninth house of travel, so this must be the "trigger"for these space flights. Yet, this seems a very flimsey trigger.

Look again. Glenn's natal Neptune and Moon are in quincunx aspect. Look at the declinations in the natal chart. Moon is also contraparallel Neptune. Neptune sits on the cusp of the ninth house. An aspect to the Moon also sets off Neptune in ninth house.

Neptune in the ninth house of long distance travel is tied to Uranus, planet of innovation and science, as well as the Moon, the body associated with the daily tide of events. This yod focuses energy, just like the point of an arrow, onto that Neptune.

The progressed charts for the flight dates are even more revealing.

Neptune is aspected in both cases by the progressed Moon, however minor the aspects. More vividly, Uranus is involved in major progressed oppositions from the ninth in both cases. Ruler of the ninth house, the Sun, is in dynamic progressed aspect with Venus both years. Venus squares Uranus in the birth chart.

These charts are gold mines of information if you look closely.

Certainly being an astronaut has been the dream of many young boys. Glenn has Neptune in Leo and dreams big. Glenn has achieved his dream, and his flights have not been flights of fancy, but will be remembered in history.
