Derek
Appleby was a well-known
teacher and lecturer, and
a member and president of
the Astrological Lodge of London.
A close friend and co-founder
of The Company of Astrologers,
he revived traditional astrology
in London in the 1970s with
an old copy of Lily’s
Christian Astrology.
Inspirational
and eager for discourse, his
practical approach to astrology
was championed by Geoffrey Cornelius,
and they worked together to
revive the study and practice
of horary in the UK. He
worked diligently with rectification
of charts he came into
contact with, as he experimented
with the pre-natal epoch. He
preferred to give written judgments,
and he was an avid correspondent
with students and friends
around the world. Thorough and
disciplined, he never ceased
to be surprised with the
delight of astrology.

Much
of Derek’s political and mundane
astrology work stemmed from
his interest in his wife Catherine’s
political career; she
was the mayor of her local town.
Appleby was also a proponent
of horary astrology, and
wrote a book on the subject.
Derek
died suddenly of a heart attack.
Maggie Hyde writes:
His
sudden death, coinciding with
the ingress of Pluto into Sagittarius,
occurred with solar eclipses
falling on the Company’s Saturn
at 9 Scorpio in the 4th house.*
It was the
darkest moment in the Company’s
history, the loss of a father
figure.

Derek
was buried at sea off
the south coast of England.
His wife Catherine passed the
charge of his astrological
papers after his death to Maggie
Hyde and Geoffrey Cornelius,
who had worked with him for
many years at The Company of
Astrologers.
