Astrological CouplesAs astrologers we too often find ourselves alienated from those in our local communities and are considered eccentric or even questionable individuals. Historically, before astrology had the broader acceptance it has won today, our sense of isolation was even greater. How exceptionally blessed, then, are those astrologers whose partners are also deeply involved in astrology. (The name of the partner who has passed on is underlined, with a link to their memorial. A suriving partner's name is not underlined.) Charles and Vivia Jayne were one such fortunate couple, Julia and Edward Wagner another, and, more recently, Ken and Joan Negus and Louise and Bruno Huber. Below are some additional couples who jointly have made an impact on our field.
NY NCGR Members Joanna Shannon and Julian Armistead.
Michel and Françoise Gauquelin
AstroDatabank
says that Ernest was born June 4, 1893 at 6:28 PM CST in Detroit,
Michigan. He died March 6, 1968, at the age of 75. Catherine was born on April 7, 1896, at
5:12 PM CST, in Greenup, KY, and died on April 7, 1988, at the age of 92.
Augusta Foss Heindel taught astrology to her husband before they were married. She was a leader of the Rosicrucians along with him, and became head of the organization after his death. Her articles were frequently published in the astrology magazines of the day, and this photo of her accompanied one of them. According to their AstroDatabank
records, Max was born July 23, 1865, at 4:32 AM LMT, in Copenhagen, Denmark, 12E35, 55N40.
He died January 6, 1919. Augusta was born January 27, 1865, at 5:20 PM LMT, in Mansfield,
OH, 82W30: 40N45. She died May 15, 1949. Emylu Lander Hughes: The AFA Bulletin for Fall, 1997 notes: "Emylu Lander Hughes, PMAFA, was the author of several books and wrote for Dell Horoscope. Mrs. Hughes served the AFA as a Building Fund Trustee, and spoke at many AFA conventions." Her AstroDataBank record adds that she was an astrologer and researcher listed in the first edition of Who's Who of American Women, 1958. She was a newspaper editor and radio-tv news director in Florida. Ingrid Naiman wrote, "Emylu Lander Hughes was one of the early pioneers of
astrological research. She collected hundreds of
horoscopes of persons with cancer and was one of
the first to look for major signatures in large
groups of charts, before the days of computers!" Her AstroDatabank record says that she was born October 3, 1913, at 7:37 AM CST/ in Lone Oak, TX, 96W06; 33N09. This is rated A, from her to Lois Rodden. Her second marriage was to astrologer, Robert Hughes. She died June 13, 1997, in Sarasota, Florida. Alan Leo, one of the greats of all time, has his own
page on this site, but here we wish to mention
his wife, Bessie, who would not have been an unknown a century ago.
Devoted to Theosophy, she was introduced to astrology in 1903 and met
Alan Leo through an offer in his Modern Astrology Magazine for a free
chart to new subscribers. They married in 1896, and AstroDataBank notes that it lasted 21 years
but that it was a platonic marriage. After Alan's death she became editor of the
magazine. Her birth information, rated A, was given by Alan in The Art of
Synthesis. She was born April 5, 1858, at 6:47 PM, in Salisbury, England. Her date of death is not given. To Memorials A-K DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD? This memorial is interactive, and we welcome
