Don 'Moby Dick The Astrologer' Jacobs
by Jayj Jacobs and Donna Cunningham
American professional astrologer,
author, and colorful media personality, Moby Dick was based in Honolulu. His fullpage ad in the 1974 AFA
Convention program says that he taught astrology at the University of Hawaii for several years, and he appeared regularly on radio and television. His daily column called 'Future News' circulated in 38 metropolitan newspapers, and was focused on Geo-Political forecasts. Besides running in Hawai'i, it ran in a chain of Black-owned, Black Community newspapers in the 'Mid-Atlantic'East Coast region.
Moby was president of the Astrological Society of Hawaii, and he lectured at astrology conferences as well as
various local clubs and civic organizations. He was well-known
for his research into the actual Horoscope of Jesus, espoused the
Equal House system, and participated in lively debates in Mercury
Hour about his often-controversial ideas. His memorial in the
AFA Bulletin for August, 1981, noted that he was certified an
advanced member (AMAFA) and had worked on various AFA
convention faculties.
His son, astrologer Jayj Jacobs,
wrote in Mercury Hour at the time
of his death, "Moby did a lot for astrology, partly by getting
people to look at it with an open-minded skepticism, to question authority,
and to rely on experience. He investigated then promoted Equal Houses,
solar charts, drawn aspect lines, and transits without progressions.
"He scholarly researched the Horoscope of Jesus and defended it until the opposition
came over or backed down. His life's work, completed just before his death, is his novel of
the historical Jesus, JOSHUA Bar Joseph Ish Nazareth based in part on
Jesus' horoscope. As important as Moby's influence on astrology was,
he will leave his major mark on the world through JOSHUA. It is the most
inspiring book I've ever read."

"Moby Dick passed away at 11:44 p.m. Alaska-Hawaiian Standard Time on Aug. 4,1981. He died of a heart attack (his fourth) at his home in Honolulu. In the middle of one of his big chuckles, he let out his breath and was gone. Moby wanted to die that way, laughing, loving life, not fearing death."
