Darrell Martinie, 63, a.k.a. the “Cosmic
Muffin,” was proclaimed as the official astrologer
for the commonwealth of Massachusetts by Governor
William Weld in 1993. He started his broadcasting
career in 1973 doing astrological “weather reports.”
Darrell’s daily reports were syndicated
on radio stations across the country and continued
until shortly before his death in July 2006.

Darrell was born in Massachusetts, but raised
in central Illinois. He graduated from
the University of Illinois with a degree in
psychology. Then, in the early 1970s,
Darrell entered a Benedictine monastery to become
a monk, but left the monastery after several
months. He moved back to Massachusetts
in 1972 to practice astrology.

In addition to his eye-catching clothes and
his daily radio shows, Darrell was interviewed
on ABC’s show “20/20” and debated the scientific
basis of astrology on PBS’s “The David Suskind
Show.”

Darrell became a member of American Federation
of Astrologers in 1975 and lectured at many
astrological conventions. He had numerous
clients including rock stars, politicians and
others.

TRIBUTES:
Regarding Darrell Martinie........
Darrell and I were very close in college and hung
together all the time....as you might guess being that he was my Best Man in my
wedding in August of 1963. College was never dull with Darrell around. There are
some things I remember vividly about Darrell even though we parted our ways in
June of 1965 and I never heard from him again. We just lost contact as we both
went our separate ways.
Darrell had always expressed an interest in
getting into politics and I just presumed I would be reading about him in that
venue someday. His first step would have been to work as an aid to one of the
Illinois senators and move up from there. Never guessed he would go into
Astrology...never in a thousand years.
He was a fantastic pianist and would entertain the
Fraternity brothers before and after dinner every night. Darrell and I would
argue constantly over dinner poking fun at each other with some form of "witty"
nonsense. He was great at that and could come back with a fabulous response each
and every time. He was a grand person to have as a "brother" at the
house.
We were pledges together back in 1961 and were
initiated into the Psi Upsilon Fraternity together. The attached picture shows
Darrell at his finest...one the floor to the right with his martinie glass in
tow. I'm in the middle with only a head showing.
You're welcome to use the photo. If you like you
can also use my name for credits but I did not take the photo.
