HOWARD SASPORTAS
(1948-1992)
The Astrology Encyclopedia by James R. Lewis, p. 468, gives the following
biographical information:
Howard Sasportas recieved an MA in humanistic psychology at Antioch
University in New York. In 1973, he moved to London and began to
study astrology at the the Faculty of Astrological Studies. He
received the FAS's Gold Medal in 1979 and began to teach for them.
He also graduated from Psychosynthesis. In 1983, Howard and Liz Greene founded the Centre for Psychological Astrology in
London.
Erin Sullivan writes in the NCGR Memberletter, April-May, 1992:
"Aside from his vast contribution to astrology and
our global community, Howard Sasportas touched each individual
in a uniquely personal way. All astrologers and
friends worldwide will miss him tremendously.
"In his
last two and a half years, Howard had two back
operations to correct a congenital spinal syndrome
which crippled him; simultaneously he began to
experience symptoms related to the HIV virus. Howard's
personal desire for privacy was respected in this
matter until his illness became acute. His death was
due finally to the complications of AIDS.
"You will be happy to hear that he died peacefully
and courageously and consciously, cared for by the
tireless staff at Middlesex Hospital who gave him every
possible assistance, all the while helping him maintain
his life with his friends and family. He died with his
closest loved ones at his side all the day, who soothed,
touched and helped him go."

TRIBUTES TO HOWARD SASPORTAS:
Loretta Proctor writes,
In 1987 I joined the CPA and Howard Sasportas became my main tutor. I asked him to read my chart and this was the
first time I had asked anyone to do this. The experience was very special.
Howard made me feel confidence and faith in my creative abilities for the
first time ever...till that time, eveeryone seemed to make me feel I was not
that good at anything. He said...I shall be a good father to you today...and
he was...he fathered my creativity.
It was so awful to see him change almost overnight from a
healthy, handsome man to the thin, crippled person he became towards the end
of his life. He had been such a restless Aries before, pacing the room as he
taught us in his own inimitable way, full of warmth, laughter, vitality and
humour. But the illness forced him to sit still and strangely it made him
seem far deeper, more serene and more Capricornian as the bones of his face
became more gaunt. (He had Capricorn rising, Sun Aries) But it was the
saddest thing to see such a change.
I missed him when he died as if he had been a close relation.
There was something truly special about Howard Sasportas...a man of great
charisma and real worth as a human being. As well as a brilliant
psychological astrologer. I felt as if a part of me had died with him and I
still see his vivid face and hear his voice occasionally as if we were all
still at his flat in London enjoying his wise teachings, laughing at his
wicked wit.
I have only recently become acquainted with howard sasportas' work and
it has fundamentally changed my world. he has reached out and touched
me from beyond the constraints of the physical plane.
today i was reading one of his books and i reflected that i would have
been a much more complete person had i had the luxury of a father with
wisdom such as his.
it is wonderful and consoling to think that we can touch one another
with writing and that god (however you perceive the word) cannot stop
that. i send him thanks every day. regards, david
