Mary Helena Callas
Ericksen Stansfield lived a very active life,
besides being a professional certified astrologer,
she also participated in various
organizations. Stansfield
lived in Santa Rosa for 20 years and
passed away on Oct. 8 from liver failure.
She was 83. Originally
from Bowling Green, Ky., she moved to
Santa Rosa to retire in the early '80s with
her late husband, Horace Ericksen.
Her daughter Elaine says,''She loved the people and culture of Santa
Rosa. She liked to go browsing in the stores,
she was a fixture in the library and she would
read a book a day there. She never liked to sit idle. She was always
sewing something, reading something or having
company."
Earlier in her life, she worked at the Chapel
of the Highlands Mortuary and later a furniture
store, both in the city of Millbrae. She even
ran for public office in the city of San Bruno
once, her daughter recalled. Outside her
work life, she was just as busy.

As an astrologer her daughter says, ''She was uncanny. She would ask
you if you had just gotten a new job when you
had. She would be right on. She believed the
stars are indicators based on their placement,
the time of year and the year you were born.''
Helena was ''a mentor on how important relationships
are and the importance of keeping in touch with
people to let them know you care. She was always sending cards to her family
and friends,'' she said.
Stansfield was a member of numerous organizations
including the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in
Santa Rosa, the Redwood Stitchers, the Santa
Rosa Quilters, the National Organization of
Embroidery, the National Council of Catholic
Women; Daughters of the American Revolution;
the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, Daughters
of Penelope and the Kentucky Colonels. Stansfield was a member of the Young Ladies
Institute at St. Robert's Church in San Bruno,
where she was choir director. An accomplished
pianist, she played the organ and piano at churches
throughout the Bay Area.
She is survived by her companion, Clyde Oicles, her 4 children;
12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and
four great -great- grandchildren.
