HELEN A. BARTHOLOMEW (nee Macknosky), died of breast cancer on March 30, 2007 at her home in Harrison, NJ. Born in Throop, PA, Ms. Batholomew lived in Harrison for 41 years. She was executive assistant or the Mezzacappa Managment Co. in New York City for 10 years before retiring in 1995. Prior to that, she worked for Lazard Freres and RCA/NBC in Rockefeller Plaza in NY. A longtime practitioner of transcendental meditation, Helen taught astrology at Rutgers University Evening School. Among the many civic groups Helen belonged to she was very active in NJ chapter of NCGR, serving as Secretary for most of the 1980s. Helen's skilled assistance and meticulous taking of the minutes at Board meetings always gave clarity to Board business and her passion for astrology never waned. Duty called in the early 90s when Helen left the Board to be a caregiver to her ailing mother. Her service to the chapter, her instinctive sense of professionalism and her sunny personality will not be forgotten. record says, "An American astrologer,
she was awarded the PAI Award in 1978 for her successful battle
with the City Hall of Millbrae, CA, in having astrology removed
from the category of 'soothsayer.' The fine they had attempted to
levy on her was transferred to a business license. Professional Astrologers Incorporated
gave her their annual award for that achievement. A cheerful, well-liked
counselor, she died of cancer in 1980. AstroDataBank notes that she was born November 25, 1945,
at 08:06 PST in San Francisco, CA, 37N 7; 122W25 , data rated A,

notes that she was a third-generation astrologer following her mother and grandmother into
the field. She joined the American Federation of Astrologers in 1969 and was certified
a professional astrologer (PMAFA) and teacher. She also belonged to Professional Astrologers Incorporated,
was a board member, and was President from 1978 until her death. EDWARD DOANE: Late husband of the great Doris Chase Doane, Rev. Edward Doane
was an American astrologer, writer, teacher, and president of
the The Church of Light. According to his
AstroDatabankk record, rated A, from his memory to the Church of Light records, he was born on
October 13, 1892, at 3:28 AM CST, in Daykin, NE, 97W18; 40N19. He died at the age of 78 on June 15, 1971. GUSTAVE ECKSTROM: Suggested by Leslie Nielsen, Gustav Eckstrom was a long-time professional astrologer
and teacher of generations of students in Minneapolis, MN. Astrological Pioneers of America
notes that he was born in Chicago on June 1, 1892, at 7:28 AM, and died on May 30, 1970 in Minneapolis, MN.
His books included Celestial Healing, Planetary Psychology of Types, Cosmic Energy Therapy,
Planetary Keywords, and Zodiac Health Hints. MARTI J. ELIAS: Although she was strictly a student in astrology, in truth she was a teacher in life. Her wisdom reached many souls and her generosity helped carry many of her friends and family through the years. She collected astrology books and was one of those rare souls who actually read them! Her departure after a sudden illness has left all who knew her saddened by her passing but rejoicing in her memory.

extraordinary astrologer based in Los
Angeles who died in the mid 80s of aids. He was beloved
by all who worked with him, clairaudient, clairvoyant with incomparable
astrological insights. Xx .
RITA FRANCOMANO: Lucky Sweeny writes: Rita Francomano, died in 2007, I, unfortunately, don't know any of the details. Rita was an astrologer and had a metaphysical bookstore in Towson MD. She was one of the founders of the MD NCGR chapter and helped establish an astrology community in the Baltimore area. She founded
and was president of the IAA research Division, a non-profit research company
dedicated to the study of biological periodicity, cycles and astrology. She
taught astrology, astronomy and biorhythms at Akron University, Kent State
University, and for the cities of Barberton Ohio, Stow Ohio and Akron Ohio.
She authored several books on astrology. She passed away August 25, 1999,
after a sudden illness. ANGELA GALLO: AstroDatabank says
she was an American astrologer practicing in the Van Nuys, CA area.
She was outstanding in horary astrology.
She co-edited and published "The Rising Sign" from 1971-76 and was co-author of "Celebrity
Profiles." According to
data she gave in that book, rated A, she was born August 29, 1923, at 3:00 AM EDT, in
the Bronx, NY. She died May 21, 1990. CAROL GARLICK: (1941-2003) Carol was treasurer of the AFAN Steering Committee and was active in the early planning of UAC '98 and Project Focus, sponsored by ISAR, NCGR, and AFAN. Carol was a warm and generous friend and coworker with a wonderfully clever sense of humor. She worked for Matrix as their Marketing Director, was a contributor to Astrology for Women, edited by Gloria Star, and was active for a time in the Atlanta astrological community. Carol will surely be missed by many of her astrological colleagues and friends. According to the obituary published in the Chicago Suburban Daily Herald on August 13, 2003, Carol Ann Garlick was born on June 30, 1941 in Chicago, and died Monday, August 11, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. Carol was a professional astrologer. She loved art, photography, and theater. Carol was also a master gardener and enjoyed playing the violin and the harp. Astrological Pioneers of America says that he began his studies of astrology in 1931 while still in college. It adds that he compiled two volumes of valuable birth data. In 1960 he was the tenth person to pass the PMAFA exam and he contributed generously to the American Federation of Astrologers. His AstroDatabank record cites the following information, rated A, from
him in Mercury Hour April, 1980. He was born December 28, 1910, at 8:25
AM in Plainfield, NJ. He died November 4, 1983, in Mt. Shasta, CA. Carol Perkins remembers, "I studied with Carl Helm. I took his Weather Astrology class and
visited with him many times. He also lectured at my book store, The New
Moon in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was brilliant when it came to
Weather Astrology and Horary Astrology." CAROLE HEMSTREET was a dedicated astrologer since 1971. Astrology was her avocation and she truly loved what she did. She has been an avid part of NCGR chapters in New York, the bay area of California and New Mexico. Carole received many certifications and throughout her astrology career, continually strived to better her craft and convey the personal perspective in every chart she created. It was her sincere desire that astrologers across the country benefit from her knowledge and literary resources. ELEANOR HESSELTINE: A teacher of Charles
Jayne, whom he held in very high esteem. Mentioning her in
his books and crediting her for the techniques that he learned in
rectification. The directional declination technique,
Ascendant Arc, is attributed to her. DOROTHY BEACH HUGHES: Her AstroDatabank record says, "American astrologer since 1946, a past president of the AFA and the director of the Cellar School. She was a founder of the Seattle Astrological Association and was active for many years, almost until it reorganized as the Washington State Astrological Association. She was the owner and manager of "Books" in Seattle, WA, and was the author of Basic Elements of Astrology. Listed in Who's Who of American Women." Astrological Pioneers of America notes that in the 1960s, she led a successful fight to prevent the inclusion of astrology in a proposed fortune-telling ordinance in Seattle. She joined the America Federation of Astrologers in 1949, served on the Board of Directors from 1960-69, and was President from 1967-69. Her data, rated A by AstroDataBank from her memory, shows that she was born
June 6, 1915, at 7:30 AM PST, in Portland, OR. She died of cancer on April 25, 1987, in Seattle, WA. BILL LAND (Information from Charmain Aston) (born: May 10, 1944 12:00 PM Cleveland, OH, USA Passed: August 21, 2003 at 9:16 AM Cleveland, OH, USA) Bill was from Cleveland, Ohio but had worldwide astrological contacts throughout the Internet. He excelled in Uranian astrology and had a special place in his practice for Algol. Charmain Aston writes that over the 20 years of friendship with Bill, they would gather in a small group and astrologically attempt to solve crimes. As a result of the power outage experienced on August 14-15 , 2003 in Cleveland, his loss of air conditioning facilitated respiratory failure. He had suffered from respiratory problems for many years. Bill was a very gentle soul who will be missed by many. Frederick Woodruff remembers, "At the age of 14, I became deeply interested in astrology. Somehow I acquired a list of practicing astrologers in the Southern California area, and wrote to several of them, expressing my eagerness to learn -- coupled with my limitations of age, location and finances. Of the many people I contacted only Margaret Latvala, a teacher in Los Angeles and soul sister of Ivy Jacobson, wrote back to me with the intention of making sure I received proper training. After conferring with Ivy, Margaret informed me that Ivy offered to send me -- free of charge -- all the books, tables and forms I would need to undertake her correspondence course -- waving, too, the fee for the course itself -- the instruction of which would be overseen by Mrs. Latvala. And so began my sojourn into the world of astrology."
