THE RULING PLANET

Each sign has a designated ruler, a planet who is the "boss" of that sign, and the house where that sign resides.

If there is a planet (planet A) in a house, but the house is "ruled" by another planet (planet B), then planet A must pay attention to the whims and desires of planet B. Planet A is like a kid living in his parents home, and he must follow the parental rules and guidelines.

A planet in it's own sign is comfortable, and can pretty much do what it wishes to without worrying about other people's (or planets!) opinions or rules.

A planet in it's "natural" house still has to consider the dictates of the actual ruling planet, but it is in it's own natural environment so there is seldom a disagreement. It could be compared to that same kid, at his parents home, but playing in his very own sandbox. The parents feel that is the child's space and seldom interfere.

Aries is ruled by Mars and belongs to the 1st house. House of physical appearance.

Taurus is ruled by Venus and belongs to the natural 2nd house. House of money, possessions, and values.

Gemini is ruled by Mercury and belongs to the natural 3rd house. House of mind, communication, siblings, and short trips.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon and belongs to the natural 4th house. House of home, environment, endings, and base of activity.

Leo is ruled by the Sun and belongs to the natural 5th house. House of pleasure, children, creativity, and gambling.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury and belongs to the natural 6th house. House of work, service, health, and small animals.

Libra is ruled by Venus and belongs to the natural 7th house. House of partners, open enemies, relationships, and contracts.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars (traditional) or Pluto (modern) and belongs to the natural 8th house. House of death, taxes, sex, and transformation.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter and belongs to the natural 9th house. House of philosophy, travel, higher education, and religion.

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn and belongs to the natural 10th house. House of public recognition, career, and reputation.

Aquarius is ruled by Uranus and belongs to the natural 11th house. House of groups, friends, and wishes.

Pisces is ruled by Neptune and belongs to the natural 12th house. House of the subconscious, sorrows, imagination, and prisons.

Sample of how to put this all together:

If the ruler of your fifth house is found in, (as an example), the house of personal possessions and money, maybe you need to work on your attitudes toward finances and spending to expand the potential of your ability to have fun and pleasure with others. It could be that the more money you make, the more likely it is that you will be attractive to that significant "other", or that the more you concentrate on developing a deep sense of personal values the better your relationships will become. It might be said that the more money you make, the more you can afford to have fun! Maybe you need to be secure both within yourself and with your finances before you are truly able to "give" of yourself in a one on one partnership.
